Why braces need extra care
Brackets and wires give plaque more places to collect. If plaque is left on the teeth, it can lead to white marks on the enamel known as white spot lesions, as well as gum inflammation. White spot lesions can be an early sign of decay.
What research shows
A 2023 systematic review of preventive and treatment measures for white spot lesions in orthodontic patients concluded that:
- Good home oral hygiene, brushing with fluoride toothpaste, is the backbone of prevention.
- Fluoride varnish appears to help mainly people who have poor oral hygiene.
- Several other approaches, such as sealants and some adhesives, did not show a clear preventive benefit.
- Most of the trials reviewed had a high risk of bias, so the evidence is limited, and your orthodontist will tailor advice to you.
Daily routine with braces
- Brush after meals if you can, and at least twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean around the brackets and under the wires with an interdental brush or other tools your orthodontist shows you.
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks, which feed the bacteria that make acid.
- Keep every appointment so that your orthodontist can check your teeth and your progress.
Braces for children and adults
Braces and clear aligners are available for children and adults. Your orthodontist will assess your teeth and bite and explain the options, the time involved and the cost.
When to see a dentist
Contact your clinic if a bracket or wire breaks or hurts, if you see white or brown marks near the brackets, or if your gums are swollen or bleeding.
Frequently asked questions
Do braces cause cavities?
Braces do not cause cavities by themselves, but they make cleaning harder. With a careful routine, most people avoid problems.
Can adults get braces?
Yes. Braces and clear aligners are used for adults as well as children.
Do I need to see a dentist as well as my orthodontist?
Yes. Regular check-ups and cleanings are still important during treatment.
